One year of the HUB!

Filed under: Update — sharkinf @ 1:58 pm

Excited and immensely proud that almost exactly one year ago today we started our first round of The Games Hub!

Kicking off with this lovely bunch Meet the gang! followed 6 months later by these handsome devils IMG_1209sml

all staring wide-eyed into the over-bright headlights of games development!

One year on and it’s been a success beyond anything we imagined.

  • 26 people have taken part
  • 7 teams in total
  • 2 teams still with us
  • 4 teams currently taking part
  • Set up 2 companies in the first 6 months
  • Two games released
  • Fallen having more than 50,000 downloads in the first 2 weeks
  • 15 expert visits from, the worlds of games and business
  • Press coverage on from Radio 1, Colchester Gazette, EADT, BBC News and more!
  • Next round starting November 2015

It’s been an amazing year and we can’t wait for the next. And we also can’t thank enough all those who have helped it become such a huge success, without them the hub simply wouldn’t exist or be able to have such amazing achievements!

And everyone else who has helped!!

We’re also still open to applicants, but you need to get in quick by the end of the month.

So, for those wanting to apply fill out the form here;

The first IDM and we’re still recruiting!

Filed under: Update — sharkinf @ 12:33 pm

Colchester & Essex had it’s first ever ‘Indie Developer Meet’ this week and it went down a storm!

From the original plans and expectations of having around 50 people attending around 180 tickets were booked with well over 100 people turning up. It was an amazing evening and simply couldn’t have happen without Daniel at Doubleup Gaming and all his relentless hard work arranging it and his guys for helping out so much on the night. Also a massive thanks to Andy Touch from Unity for 2 excellent talks.

The whole night was made even better by the free pizzas from Papa John’s and a rather tasty beer from Pitfields brewery (who also made the beer with IDM bottles!). Thanks also to the University of Essex for the use of their beautiful business school building and Event Essex for helping out and Cymax Computers and Illuminate Design.

Feedback has been incredibly good and we can’t wait for the next on in the new year!!

Jon Hare, the next round and IDM-Colchester

Filed under: Update — sharkinf @ 12:45 pm

This week the teams were given one of the best talks the hub has had so far by the amazing Jon Hare.

He gave an incredibly insightful and interesting look into his history, from his days starting up and running Sensible Software, through the industries different eras of games development, on to the modern market that is the app stores. Jon also spent time with the teams offering some superb thoughts and design ideas to all the games and teams.

And…

We’re also over very pleased to announce that we are recruiting for the next round of the HUB!!! Whether you’re a veteran developer thinking about setting up on your own, a team who want to grow and take things further or at university, get in touch.

All you have to do is apply here, or if you prefer, send an email to application@thegameshub.com.

This 3rd round will be starting in November and we’ll be holding interviews during October. Please be aware that spaces are limited.

And…

Finally, don’t forget we’re having the first ever IDM-Colchester meet up on Tuesday October the 13th!! We have close to 150 people signed up now, not swayed in any way by the thought of free pizza and beer 🙂 and the talk by Andy Touch from Unity, it’s going to be an awesome evening!!
